The evolution of the diffraction profile, providing highly accurate data for coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) determination was investigated using synchrotron X ray diffraction during in situ heating and cooling. The data on the temperature variation of the thermal expansivity of quasicrystalline powders were obtained by measuring the center of mass position of the (322002) peak. Measurements of the (322002) peak position in F-type icosahedral Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals were carried out on the powder diffraction beamline during in-situ annealing of mechanically alloyed powders. The thermal expansion coefficient was determined in the range of 350-1080 K. The relaxation of phason-type quasilattice defects contributes into the value of CTE.
