The study of pore space morphology in kerogen from Bazhenov formation

    The kerogen of different catagenesis in the samples from the Bazhenov formation were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a focused ion beam (FIB), scanning/transmission electron microscopy S/TEM and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis. It is found that at the early stages of catagenesis only isolated individual pores with the size of less than 0.2 microns was formed in the kerogen. At higher stages of catagenesis (MC3, MC4) the pore size reached 2 micron and their volume was 22 % of the kerogen and connectivity of about 75 %. A similar volume of pores is found in the mineral matrix in these samples, their connectivity of above 90 %. The composition of the mineral matrix surrounding the kerogen was studied.
