The capabilities and limitations of mathematically modeling isotope water-rock interaction in studying hydrothermal processes

Abstract

Simulating fluid-rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope interactions in hydrothermal systems is considered. A classification of existing model approaches is proposed based on analysis of the assumptions made on the conditions and chemical features of the interaction. For each major model class, the capabilities and limitations of its use in the interpretation of isotope variations in natural processes are determined. The most promising lines for the development of methods of mathematically modeling water-rock isotope interaction are identified. -Journal summary
