Technological and complexity risk analysis for set based design evaluation

    Abstract

    This paper demonstrates an adaptation of a novel technology risk assessment method within standard Systems Engineering techniques. An evaluation of technological risk using Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) is adjusted to make use of N-squared diagrams to measure systems architecture complexity, and finally risk appetite matrices are proposed as an early selection methodology to screen high-risk design points and manage adequate responses. This adaptation can facilitate early conceptual design architecture objective analysis in complex systems, making the initiation in methodologies like Lean Development less challenging for novel users.
