Synthesis and structure of the highly chlorinated [60]fullerene C 60Cl30 with a drum-shaped carbon cage

Abstract

Chlorination of C60 with SbCl5, ICl, or ICl 3 at 220-250 °C gives the highly chlorinated fullerene C 60Cl30. The carbon cage of the C60Cl 30 molecule has a unique cylindrical shape (see picture), composed of two aromatic six-membered rings located opposite each other and one equatorial aromatic 18π trannulene belt. DFT calculations suggest that C 60Cl30 is the final product of [60]fullerene chlorination.
