Shannon Decomposition of Convolutional Codes

We present a method to obtain a trellis-oriented canonical encoding matrix of a convolutional code using the Shannon decomposition of the minimal code trellis. The minimal code trellis can be obtained as the syndrome trellis based on an arbitrary parity-check matrix.
