Roton creation and vortex nucleation in superfluids

The nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation is used to analyze the superfluid flow around an impurity. The differences between the processes of vortex nucleation and roton creation are elucidated. It is argued that vortices are nucleated when the velocity around the ion exceeds the velocity of sound. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
