Pulsed acousto-optic switching of a bistable cavity polariton system

Abstract

Theoretical studies have been made of nonequilibrium transitions in a planar exciton-polariton system under composite acousto-optic excitation: picosecond-long strain pulses causing reversible perturbations of exciton energy and stationary optic pump along the normal to the cavity surface. It is found that pulsed acoustic excitation can lead to ultrafast switching of the optic response, which is related to the transition between the stability branches of the bistable polariton system.
