It is shown that if the distance between enhancer and promoter of miniwhite gene is increased to 3 TPN, then Zeste protein becomes necessary for effective interaction between enhancer and promoter. Substitution of miniwhite gene promoter sequence between -111 and -33 PN by four copies of the expected binding site for communicator protein leads to the more effective interaction between enhancer and promoter of miniwhite gene, which is therewith independent of Zeste protein.
