Phase transitions in thermal anneals of thin magnetic Tb-Fe films

Abstract

Mössbauer and magnetooptical studies of thin magnetic Tb26Fe74 films subjected to thermal annealing in air are reported. Two samples were prepared by rf sputtering, one with the surface of the Tb26Fe74 layer exposed, and the other with a protective Si3N4 coating. The Mössbauer and magnetooptical measurements show that both samples are initially amorphous and exhibit magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the surface of the film, but at the end of a complete cycle of stepped annealing the magnetic moments of the Fe atoms are oriented in the plane of the sample. The reconstructed distribution functions of the hyperfine field Hn at the 57Fe nuclei and the magnetooptical hysteresis loops indicate that the atomic ordering processes differ in each sample.
