On the origin of dielectric properties of water

Abstract

The article proposes an approach alternative to the Debye theory. It is established that the conductivity dispersion is intrinsic to all conductors possessing any sort of charge localization. For numerous materials, the frequency dispersion of conductivity is characterized by the parameter 's' close to unity. Alongside with the orientation polarization as a source of the dielectric relaxation in water, the proton diffusion, resulting from self dissociation of H2O molecules, can also consistently describe the dielectric response of water at frequencies below 1011 Hz. The situation continues to the present. Important is that the relaxation like shape of the dielectric spectrum is known to be reconciled with different microscopic interpretations.
