New phases in the double-Hg layer system Hg2Ba2LnCu2O8-δ (Ln=Nd-Gd, Dy-Lu)

We report here the synthesis, structural and magnetic characterization of ten new Hg-2212 rare-earth substituted phases. The rare earth cations seem to replace partially for Hg and this substitution is a function of the ionic radius of the Ln3+ cation. Since the analogous Hg2Ba2(Y,Ca)Cu2O8-δ compound exhibits superconductivity up to 70K, these new phases constitute an open field of activity into the discovery of new high-Tc superconducting phases.
