Nanoclay/epoxy solution flow through reinforcing fabric during liquid molding

The incorporation of nanoclay particles in epoxy resin is increasingly being used with reinforcing fibers for the development of advanced composite materials. The nanoclay/epoxy solution flow characteristics through fabric during liquid molding of nanocomposites are not very well understood and therefore are the subject of this study. An apparatus was developed to measure nanoclay/epoxy solution flow rate and pressure for transverse flow, and in addition the displacement of the fluid flow front for in-plane flow through standard E-glass fabric. The experiments were performed under full control of compression on the fabric preform and without channeling flow that usually accompanies transverse flow measurements. Dispersion of nanoclay particles was carried out using high shear mixing procedures with successive ultrasound vibrations of the solution. The quality of the nanoclay dispersion was verified using scanning electron microscope analysis after curing. Corresponding theoretical models for evaluation of the principal components of permeability tensor are presented and some practical observations regarding the measurements of semi-major and semi-minor axis of the flow pattern are described. An analysis of the experimental data and the affect of nanoclay concentration in the solution on the flow are discussed.
