Modeling of drilling fluids flow in a borehole for drilling optimization

Abstract

A large database was populated by systematic modeling of flows over the parameter ranges which incorporate all flow parameter of interest like pressure drop, average flow rate, velocity field, shear rate and local viscosity. An interpolation algorithm was optimized for fast calculation of pressure drop, moment and forces applied to the drillstring corresponding to any drilling condition. To calculate the pressure drop for certain flow the interpolation algorithm first finds values of the pressure drop in the results space of the database, corresponding to the nearest values of input parameters. For calculation of the pressure drop along the whole wellbore the annulus is divided in a discrete number of sections with constant diameters, eccentricity and inclination. In each section the pressure drop is calculated with the interpolation algorithm described above. These pressure drop values and the details about the hydrodynamic processes in the borehole are needed to optimize fluid flow for downhole pressure and ECD management.
