Metallized polyelectrolyte microcapsules

An Approach based on the spatially confined metallization of the shell or the interior of polyelectrolyte capsules was analyzed for preparing hollow and filled metal spheres. The loading of polyelectrolytes capsules with metal nanoparticles could be performed by electrostatic adsorption during capsule assembly or by direct synthesis in the microcapsules from the corresponding salts. A sublayer of heterogeneous TiO2/Pd catalytic centers was prepared at the desired parts of the polyelectrolyte (poly(allylamine)/ poly(styrene sulfonate), PAH/PSS) capsule. The results show that the metalized polyelectrolyte shell is pH sensitive and possess pH-controlled permeability.
