Line parameter-free fault location algorithm for series compensated transmission lines

Abstract

This paper presents a new line parameter-free fault location algorithm for series compensated transmission lines. It differs from other fault location algorithms as it does not rely on the use of any line parameters. The accuracy of Line parameter settings depends on the weather and loading condition. The line-parameter-free aspect of the new algorithm makes it more reliable and accurate. The algorithm is designed for the most common fault type i.e. the single line to ground fault. More importantly it takes the non-linear nature of the Metal Oxide Varistor impedance into account and performs accurate impedance calculations for the series compensator based on the phase currents. The algorithm uses synchronized data samples for voltage and current measurements from both ends of the line.
