The 2003 major blackouts across the UK, US, Canada, Italy, Sweden and Denmark are indications that even developed nations cannot take secure electricity supplies for granted. Just like consumers, tax and assurance businesses are also worried about blackouts. In today's privatized, market-based electricity supply industry, the UK relies on free market forces to ensure a secure supply of energy. Now, significant efforts are being exerted to provide a secure supply that relies on robust electricity networks, a secure supply of primary energy sources necessary to produce electicity and having enough power plants.
