Integration of X-ray micro-computed tomography and focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy data for pore-scale characterization of Bazhenov formation, Western Siberia

    Abstract

    This paper presents a research approach to study properties of Bazhenov formation of Western Siberia. The approach is based on application of focusedion-beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The studied core samples were recovered from Bazhenov formation of Salymskoye field in Western Siberia. Results obtained with these methods are considered in the context of a set of multi-scale 3D models of digital rock. The pore space of each model is subdivided into two parts: connected pore space and isolated pores (within the spatial resolution of the model). The reconstructed structural and physical characteristics of the rock samples are compared to standard laboratory measurements. As the result of the study, it was shown that Bazhenov rock samples are characterized by a wide range of pore size: from tens of nanometers up to several microns. Authors discuss future opportunities related to application of FIB-SEM and micro-CT methods for multi-scale characterization of pore space structure and rock properties of unconventional shale reservoirs.
