Geometry of Lagrangian dispersion in turbulence

Abstract

The geometrical aspects of Lagrangian dispersion were studied via direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equations at moderate Reynolds numbers, and a simple phenomenological model of the Lagrangian kinematics. It was shown that initially, regular clusters of points lies in the dissipation range rapidly evolve into very strongly distorted configurations. The phenomenological model allowed to quantitatively extrapolate the DNS measurements to the high Reynold's number regime.
