Abstract

A systematic approach is developed for constructing solutions of Virasoro and W constraints like those imposed on the partition function of matrix models. In the case of the discrete hermitean one-matrix models the partition function, which is also the τ-function of the forced Toda chain hierarchy is represented as a certain correlator in a model of a free massless scalar field on a sphere. This implies a systematic approach for building up discrete models with explicit W symmetries, which look similar and probably belong to same universality class as conventional multimatrix models. Parallels with the coadjoint orbit method are briefly discussed.
