Flexible Machining Cell Control with the Modified Petri Net Methodology

Abstract

This paper describes the design of a controller for a flexible manufacturing cell including a CNC lathe, a CNC machining centre and a robot. The production of seven different parts of light vehicle clutch assemblies is used to establish the cell controller specifications and test the functionality and validity of Modified Petri Nets (MPN) for this type of application. From the above findings and development, the modelling of symmetric processes sharing more than one resource place was shown to create a problem with the MPN methodology. The theory was extended with a new type of link (1∗) to include this particular case and further research is required to check the complete validity of the MPN methodology for all manufacturing control applications.
