Fabrication of surface relief gratings on lithium niobate by combined UV laser and wet etching

Abstract

Surface relief gratings have been fabricated on pure and Ti indiffused lithium niobate samples by a two step process which combines optical and chemical etching. After illumination of the surface of a lithium niobate sample with pulsed ultraviolet radiation, minor damage occurs due to the strong interaction of the light with the material. Atomic force microscopy pictures of the surface morphology before and after wet etching are shown.
