Abstract

40 Gbit/s return-to-zero (RZ) and non-return-to-zero (NRZ) transmission over standard singlemode fibre (SMF) are compared. The RZ modulation scheme enabled error-free transmission over a link length of at least 432 km, whereas the NRZ modulation scheme enabled error-free transmission over 218 km only. The advantage of RZ transmission as compared with NRZ transmission is in agreement with theoretical results.
