Abstract

Polycrystalline HgBa2CuO24+δ (Tc = 96 K) is studied in the superconducting state using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The superconducting energy gap A is determined by electron tunneling spectroscopy at different locations on the sample surface. Histograms of the extracted gaps reveal 2 values (8.5±1.6 meV and 15.1±1.4 meV). We attribute this result to the presence of different crystallographic faces with different gap values, indicating gap anisotropy.
