Dynamics of ion motion in an elongated cylindrical cell of an ICR spectrometer and the shape of the signal registered

Abstract

The dynamics of ion motion in a model cylindrical cell of an ICR spectrometer are calculated. An expression for the shape of the signal registered is obtained for an ICR spectrum with Fourier transformation. It is shown that the kinetic energy of ions can be determined by the shape of this signal. The sensitivity of a spectrometer with a cylindrical cell is shown to be independent of ion mass at high input resistances of the detector circuit and to be inversely proportional to ion mass at low input resistances.
