Abstract

Thin lms, coatings, and layers represent an important class of quasi-two-dimensional systems, which are characterized by one dimension (thickness) being much smaller than the other two. A further important distinction must be made depending on whether the thin lm is unsupported, is a surface coating (attached to a substrate on one side), or is an interlayer embedded between two solids or layers.
