Capabilities of Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography Analysis for Hydrocarbon Exploration and Development Tasks Based on the Bazhenov Formation Example

Abstract

In the work we demonstrate capabilities of two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) for study of oils and extractable organic matter from the Bazhenov formation deposits. For the studied Bazhenov oils we estimated the same marine source of initial organic matter; we have shown that 4/1-MDBT ratio, aliphatic compounds relative content and hydrogen isotope composition reflect the differences in maturity from the beginning up to the end of oil window zone. We applied molecular analysis of core extracts within one well cross-section to identify the interval that makes the largest contribution to the produced oil. GC×GC-TOFMS is modern analytical technique that finds wide range of applications for hydrocarbon exploration and development.
