Abstract

The factors which govern the appearance of a magnetic moment on an impurity transition element in a simple metal are investigated with the X// alpha -SW cluster method with k-dependent boundary conditions using FeAl//1//2 and FeCu//1//2 clusters to model the nearest neighborhood of the substitutional impurity. The FeCu//1 2 cluster was calculated both with and without allowance for interaction of impurity and ligand d states. An impurity magnetic moment can only exist in the former case.
