Building digital rock models for bazhen formation with respect to uncertainties in rock pore-space

    Abstract

    Petrophysical studies and applicaiton of computed tomography (CT) to rock samples of unconventional reservoirs are often associated with large degree of uncertainties, both, in petrophysical data and in 3D digital rock models. The uncertainties arise from the specific nature of unconventional samples, due to low permeability, complex internal structure, as well as due to physical limitations of the applied laboratory equipment. Timely identification and handling of uncertainties is the crucial step for consistent reservoir modeling and accurate reserve estimation for unconventional oil fields. In this work, authors present a complex approach to process micro-CT, Mercury Intrusion Capillary Pressure (MICP), and Nuclear-Magnetic Resonance (NMR) results, subject to uncerainties, for rock samples of Bazhen formation of Western Siberya. This approach allows determination and handling of uncertainties to improve accuracy of petrophysical and micro-CT results. Authors demonstrate occurance of uncertainty effects in 3D digital rock models owning to resolution limit of a micro-tomograph device. Joint interpretation of micro-CT, MICP, and NMR is presented and discussed, using a rock sample of Bazhen formation, as an example.
