Personal profile

Professor Gustafsson has a long background as an educational developer for STEM disciplines. He has developed programmes for integrating scientific and academic communication in engineering education and he has developed faculty training courses for STEM colleagues at another CDIO university – Chalmers University of Technology. He has a research background in writing studies with most publications also being applications of writing development in engineering education environments. His PhD, however, is on English literature and he still teachers a course on ‘fiction for engineers’.

His international work has established him in Europe and the US. He is currently the treasurer of EATAW and the co-editor of its journal – the Journal of Academic Writing. He is also a co-series editor on the WAC Clearinghouse for the book series International Exchanges on the Study of Writing. A recent book out of that series might interest Skoltech colleagues as it focuses on Russian higher education: Emerging Writing Research from the Russian Federation. He also co-edited the most recent book in the series: Negotiating the Intersections of writing and Writing Instruction.

At Skoltech, Professor Gustafsson has helped train PhDs for their work as TAs by developing and delivering the course PE3025. He has also developed a course for faculty and TAs together to re-design their courses. His work at Skoltech will continue along these lines and he will also contribute to the further development of the faculty development program.
