Research interests

Professor Kulish expertise spans through strategic, organizational, and technological topics in Russian and global pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, as well as innovation in general. Dmitry has managed and led businesses and teams with emphasis on pharmaceutical innovation, venture development, product development, and manufacturing.  He served at the top executive positions at R-Pharm, Nanolek, Bioprocess/Pharmapark, Fresenius Kabi, as well as numerous biotech start-ups. At Intel Capital Dmitry made venture investments in IT, internet, and digital medicine companies. After completing his corporate career in 2014, Professor Kulish established a consultancy “DrugDevelopment.Ru” that advises pharmaceutical and investment companies on a broad range of strategic and operational issues related to Russian and global healthcare industry.

At Skoltech Professor Kulish serves as Director of Innovation Workshop, the anchor course of Entrepreneurship & Innovation curriculum putting the entire incoming Skoltech class into the month-long vortex of innovation challenge, culture, and community building. Dmitry also teaches courses “Industrial Applications of Biomedical Sceince” as well as “Leadership for Innovators” and aims to grow these educational and student activities into the events making Skoltech the hub of entrepreneurship and innovation at the national scale. At CEI Dmitry leads Pharmaceutical Practice that carries on proprietary non-profit research related to infrastructure and economics of Russian and global pharmaceutical innovation and product development.

Professor Kulish holds PhD in Biochemistry from Moscow Institute of Molecular Genetics, MBA in Business Strategy from the Wharton School of Business, and MA in Biotechnology from Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology. Dmitry was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard University, authored 11 peer-reviewed publications and 2 patents.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation activities

My Skoltech occupation is part-time so in parallel I am allowed to run my consultancy in the field of pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and blockchain. In this occupation I am constantly involved into advising anf financing of biomed and IT startups. I am proud of this activity as it brings a lot of value to my Skoltech teaching and mentoring. Several of my startups already went into the SkT KPIs and PR:

  • “MT-Medicals” (Skolkovo resident): I serve as an angel founding investor and member of the board
  • “Resostent” (Skolkovo resident): I serve as an angel founding investor and member of the board
  • “ARNA Genomics” (Skolkovo resident): I serve as an ICO investor and advisor to CEO
  • “Pharmadiall” (Skolkovo resident): I serve as an investor, VP-BD, and member of the board
  • “Readerchain”: I serve as an ICO investor and founder and chairman of the board

In 2020 I will publish the book entitled “Plandge Innovation” (in Russian) that will integrate the learnings of the Innovation Workshop and promote SkT brand. I will request SkT promotion support for this book to make it “The Manifesto of SkT innovation”.

Academic Reputation and Societal Impact

For 7 years I serve as Skolkovo Foundation project expert in Healthcare, Pharma, and IT. I participated in the expertise and management of the largest Skolkovo Biomed projects.

Many of my project and research activities are related to providing society with safe efficient but inexpensive generic drugs.

The bulk of my work is related to innovative pharma providing groundbreaking treatments to socially important diseases.
