Research interests

Prof Oganov’s research focuses on computational materials discovery, study of matter at high pressures, and development of novel computational methodologies for predicting the structure and properties of materials. The unique evolutionary method for crystal structure prediction, developed by Prof. Oganov, is currently used by over 7100 researchers worldwide. This method allows prediction of novel materials, both organic and inorganic, with desired properties, and has produced many breakthroughs, both in fundamental and applied research.

 

Academic Reputation and Societal Impact

Artem R. Oganov is a pioneer and world leader in crystal structure prediction and computational materials discovery. This is well reflected in his numerous high-impact publications and his citation record, in his invited lectures worldwide (including, among many other examples, prestigious Closing Remarks lecture at the 2018 Faraday meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry “Methods and applications of crystal structure prediction”), and awards (including 2019 Friendship award of Chinese government) and membership in academies (in 2015 he became a Professor of Russian Academy of Sciences, and since 2017 is a full member of the Academia Europaea). In 2020 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the American Physical Society. Since 2013 he is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America. In 2011 Prof. Oganov has created the Commission on Crystallography of Materials at the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), and he led this Commission for 6 years; now it is a permanent body within the IUCr. Since 2017 Professor Oganov is a member of Russian President’s Council for Science and Education.

In addition to his main activity – scientific research - there are several society-oriented dimensions of Oganov's work. One includes popular science lectures (including such venues as schools, prisons, rock clubs, and even stadiums, main office of Russian Centrobank, and a number of corporations), popular science articles in virtually all main popular science magazines of Russia (and many abroad), radio and TV appearances. Several documentaries were made about Prof. Oganov and his works. Another dimension is his widely discussed example of coming back to Russia, which needs to reverse the tide of the brain drain.

Teaching the next generation of materials scientists is yet another dimension. In addition to regular university classes that he teaches, and various popular science activities described above, workshops on crystal structure prediction and computational materials discovery, which he regularly holds since 2011, training more that 1000 researchers. As of 2021, Prof. Oganov has trained 17 PhDs, and 20 professors (including Assistant and Associate and Full Professors) have come through his laboratory.

Finally, the USPEX code developed by him and my students, has >7100 registered users in ~80 countries of the world. It is also used by several companies, including Sony, Toyota, Applied Materials, etc. Prof. Oganov actively collaborates with Huawei, Rusnano and Rusatom.
